At the Rockabilly-Bop-Night, The Kentucky Boys
Brainless CD, 2000

Does this phrase sound familiar: "It was just great, you should have been there". Well, if you weren't there on January 29, 2000 at the Rockabilly-Bop-Night in Heidelberg, Germany, this is your chance to catch up. The Kentucky Boys have recorded and issued their gig on CD, now available from their website.

This CD has a total of 16 tracks, all recorded live at the Swimmbad Club earlier this year. It's a complete live gig, including all the chatter, which gives a good impression of the atmosphere in the hall. Although you might have to turn up the bass a bit, the overall sound is pretty good for a live recording, and the music is just great. The Kentucky Boys are surely the top act in German Teddy Boy music, and their enthusiasm on stage is pretty obvious. This was one hot gig guys!

First thing you hear when you play this CD is a few seconds of hiss, clicks and pops, as if you were playing an old 45. The print on the CD also looks like vinyl, which completes the nostalgia of this platter. The first song is a selfpenned instrumental (by Markus Störk) titled "On The Run", which sounds a bit like Link Wray's "Batman". That's a compliment mind you! There's two more Kentucky Boys originals and the rest is a selection of well known and lesser known classic rockabilly and rock 'n' roll songs. Gene Vincent, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Don & Dewey. Dwight Pullen's "Sunglasses After Dark" has always been one of my favourites as is the Eddie Angel (Neaderthals) interpretation of Bobby Freeman's "Betty Lou's Got A New Pair Of Shoes". Actually, in this version, she's got a new Tattoo :). "You Ain't Nothing But Fine" sticks out as a fast blues ballad with a rockabilly beat. I don't really know who did the original (help me out here), but I know a great version by The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Anyway, this is a song for any live gig to get the audience dancin' and clappin'. Last track is "Teddy Boy", just to show you again what Teddy Boy music is all about. This track is also on the Kentucky Boys LP/CD "I Want It Hot". And then some hiss, pops and cracks... and that's the end of a great show.
