| Hot Rod Racin' Mama - Lucky 13 Raucous Records RAUCD 156
Lucky 13 have been rockin' American and European audiences for the last few years, including an appearance at the Viva Las Vegas Festival, and have picked up rave reviews and an enthusiastic band of followers along the way. They follow their debut release, the mini-album 'Visitors From Hail Bop', with this full-length outing, which includes a bonus video track. Lucky 13 play pounding all-out guitar driven Rock 'n' Roll mixed with darker, haunting compositions. The contrast in their material is, infact, very representative of the band itself. Guitarist Eddie looks mean & moody, like something from a 50s street gang, whilst Ani Romance - tall, blonde, sultry and undeniable sexy rips out some hot bass-lines. Eddie & Ani share the vocals - adding yet more contrasts in the bands sound. I listen to this CD with a thought of what the !! In my opinion it's not rockabilly, I place it somewhere between "Garage meets Punk" with a little "Surf" tossed in for good measure. I notice that the publicity calls the music "Dark", well I think "Muddy" would be better used to describe most of these tracks. Lucky 13 may well be a good pub band but I feel they would need to balance the sound a little. I had problems hearing the words to several songs as they were being drowned out by the guitar and drum, but if that's how it's meant to sound, you'll probably love it. As any first year Psych student can tell you, triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13 and in this case I am suffering a massive dose, I have heard true rockabilly and some real bad pretend rockabilly and now I'm all psyched out.
