Jerry Calonder, Jerry & The Rockets

Marcus "Jerry" Calonder  was born on December 14th, 1963 in Chur, Switzerland. He started to play piano and sing when he was 16 years old. At that time he discovered his love for swing and rock 'n' roll. His first idols were Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles and Elvis Presley. He formed many bands over the years, like The Jerry Gang Band or Breathless which included two future Mars Attacks members. His present band, Jerry and the Rockets includes two Hot Stuff members and is very busy playing rockabilly and rock 'n' roll all over Switzerland.

Among Jerry Calonder's highlights, he played as a supporting act for Fats Domino and with the Rockets for Bill Haley's Original Comets. Under the name of Rockin' Piano Jerry, he also worked as a solo piano bar singer artist. His a regular in the high standing hotels from the Chur area. He plays in a style that goes from spirituals, swing, boogie-woogie, blues to rock 'n' roll.

In 1999, he decided to record a CD as a solo artist. From the songs recorded at that session, four (where he's backed by a band) also appeared on a vinyl EP on JCR Records. Two out of four of these songs are Jerry's own compositions. The A-side hits off with a self-penned rockin' piano pounder titled "Back Seat Boogie". Jerry's voice is not your average every day kinda voice, he's got some kinda dark echo in his throat, which makes this piano rocker sound like an authentic rhythm & blues tune. Next is Jerry Lee's "End Of The Road". The steady slap bass rhythm really revs up this oldtimer.

Side B starts with the second original titled "Jerry's Stompin' Boogie". The title says it al, it's boogie woogie, it stomps, it rocks, it's rhythm & blues and it's rock 'n' roll! Last track of the EP is Don Raye's "Down The Road Apiece", recorded by many artists over the years, and it keeps the stompin' rhythm and Jerry's hitting the keys like a wild man. If Jerry & The Rockets are playing in your neighbourhood, don't hesitate, don't be late. You don't wanna miss anything!
